cabin at the mcmichael canadian art collection

Inspired by the gallery’s history, location, and collection, and drawing on the talents of numerous local artisans and craftspeople, this project continues Denizens’ tradition of creating sensitive, impactful, and profitable hospitality spaces for eminent museums and galleries.

The McMichael is famous for its collection of paintings by the Group of Seven – a notorious group of painters who rendered scenes of the Canadian wilderness in the late 19th and early 20th century. Denizens’ design takes inspiration from the visual language of these paintings, referencing their subject matter, palettes, textures and lines, but reimagined through the lens of Denizens principal Dyonne Fashina, a designer descended from immigrants.

“I have a personal connection to this space and this area,” said Fashina. “I grew up nearby, in the Hockley Valley, and I have fond memories of visiting the McMichael. But also, my great grandfather studied painting under Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson; I grew up surrounded by his art and still have his brushes in my kit.” This emotional investment was Denizens’ departure point to redesign the café into a meaningful space.

By delving into the history of the site and collection, engaging local trades to manifest that identity, exploring personal connections, and developing a clear design strategy from the gallery’s functional business goals, Denizens created an ideal space, which blends tradition, comfort, and modernity.
