Beginning with one humble suite, this project evolved to over 100 rooms and multiple buildings. The previous design was cold, a misguided attempt to cater to an international audience, but sadly disconnected from what is true and vibrant about Mexico.

Denizens directly engaged with local makers to revitalize this property. We worked with artisans in Cozumel and Merida, primarily women, to create custom lighting, furniture, and textiles. Rather than merely receiving instructions and completing order, these professionals were empowered to make consequential decisions. Tiles were sourced directly from regional producers through extensive local travel and research. Weavers explored patterns guided by a natural colour story. Their own cultural and creative priorities dictated the outcome. This approach was neither appropriative nor paternalistic, resulting in a final design imbued with authenticity and pride.
